CENTAL Launches ALAC in Liberia

The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) on Tuesday, March 31 officially launched the Advocacy and Legal Advice Center (ALAC) in Liberia.  The launching program attracted several dignitaries including representatives from government, civil society, diplomatic missions and private citizens.  The Chairman of the Liberia Anti-corruption Commission (LACC), Frances Johnson-Morris served as Chief Launcher.

CENTAL Launches Local Governance Toolkit
The Center for transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) on 17 November 2008 launched a toolkit that assesses the existence, effectiveness, and citizen access to key governance and anti-corruption mechanisms in each of Liberia's 15 counties. The launching event took place at the Corina Hotel in Monrovia. The event which was attended by prominent individuals from government, civil society, media, diplomatic as well as international NGO circles, brought together up to 45 participants. Dr. Amos C. Sawyer, Former Interim President and Chairman of the Governance Commission served as keynote speaker and chief launcher at the event.

Controversy Looms over Anti-Corruption Team | Print |
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf early this week named former Justice Minister and Anthony General Francis Johnson Morris as head of the commission along with other individuals to serve as commissioners. But the appointment has been criticized by some members of the civil society who believed those nominated would not independently served the commission and that the President’s appointment was done without consultation as stated in the Act that established it.

CENTAL Takes to Communities with Talk on Corruption | Print |
During the last two months, CENTAL has engaged communities and Universities with an outreach program called “Talk on Corruption with CENTAL”. Talk on Corruption with CENTAL which seeks to gauge views among varied stakeholders in the society so as to inform the fight against corruption, has thus far visited the University of Liberia (UL) on Capitol Hill, Friends of Friends Hatai Association (FOFHA) on Carey Street, Fiamah Intellectual Discourse (FID) in Sinkor, and the West Point Intellectual Forum (WEPIF) in West Point.
