CENTAL, SDI and others send Resolution on CSDF Reform to the Government |

Arcelor-Mittal's contribution to the County Social Development Fund (CSDF) represents an important source of funding for projects in Nimba, Bong and Grand Bassa counties, which are associated with the company's operations. Unfortunately, since the provision of funds by Arcelor-Mittal (USD13m), the performance of those tasked to manage and implement projects under the scheme has been largely unsatisfactory.

CENTAL Staff Participates in Climate Change Conference in Berlin |

Archie Bawo, Legal and Policy Associate of CENTAL together with 25 participants from countries across Africa completed a five-day training conference on climate change under the theme: Addressing Climate Governance Risks in a new Climate Regime- Knowledge, Economy and Equity Paradigms. The training was held from 15 – 19 June in Berlin, Germany. Mr, Bawo who work in CENTAL’s Advocacy and Legal Advice Center (ALAC) also met with staff of TI Secretariat to discuss issues pertinent to the effectiveness of the ALAC and CENTAL’s work in Liberia.

CENTAL Facilitate Corruption Prevention Workshop for German Agro Action |

The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia on Wednesday, April 1, 2010 began facilitating the first in a series of corruption prevention workshops for staff and partners of German Agro Action in Liberia. The workshop took place in the conference room of Child Fund Liberia and focused on the understanding what is corruption, it effective on development and mechanisms that would remedial actions that would be taken to prevent corruption in the work place. The workshop also allowed participants to discuss and understand the GAA internal guidance on the prevention of corruption.

TI Chair Pays Visit to Liberia |
|
The Chairperson of Transparency International Hugette Labelle paid an official visit to Liberia from March 14 – 16, 2010 and all meetings were held on March 15. While in the country, the TI Chair met with the President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf; Executive Chairperson Frances Johnson Morris of the Liberia Anti-corruption Commission (LACC) and other Commissioners of LACC and Governance Commission. She held discussions with Auditor General John Sembe Morlu, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative for Program, Marie Threase Keating and Open Society for West Africa (OSIWA) Country Representative, Joe Pemagbi and members of the Liberian Media. Importantly, Madam Labelle met with the Board of Directors and Staff of the CENTAL.

CENTAL Condemns Jobs Preference for Unity Party Partisans |

Tuesday, February 9, 2010: The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia wishes to express its dismay and dissatisfaction over statement made by the President of Liberia during the convention of the Unity Party (UP) in Gbarnga.
CENTAL believes that the statement that Ministers should employ UP partisans is counter productive to the reform of the civil service and sets a bad precedent in a bid to strengthen democracy and institutionalize fairness and transparency in government.
