CENTAL Executive Director calls for a people-centered IMF engagement with Fragile States E-mail

“We believe a new kind of engagement is needed to improve IMF interventions in fragile states. This engagement has to be people-centered - inclusive of a broad mass of stakeholders.  This engagement should consider beneficiaries and increase ownership of International Monetary Fund (IMF) interventions.  People must understand and appreciate the basis for economic prescriptions and attended austerities when prescribed.

CENTAL Invited to Participate In First High-level Meeting of Open Government Partnership

Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) represented by its Executive Director, Thomas Doe Nah has been invited to attend the first high-level meeting of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) in Washington DC, USA, from July 11 to 13, 2011.  

During the course of the meeting, Nah will serve as a panelist during an interactive discussion on “fighting Corruption” sharing an open government experience related to anti-corruption, reflecting on what has worked and why, and drawing out key lessons for open government approaches in this area. The moderator will then ask panelists a series of questions aimed at provoking frank discussion and debate, and will then open the discussion up to questions and comments from the audience. The discussion will be moderator by  Daniel Kaufmann, Senior Fellow, The Brookings Institution.

CENTAL Requests Legislature to Pass Code of Conduct and Whistle-blowers' Protection Laws

CENTAL has written both Houses of the Liberian Legislature requesting their review and passage of the draft Code of Conduct for public officials and employees and the Whistle-blowers Protection Act.  The letters indicated that though the legislature in the last five years passed several important laws, these two laws were linchpins critical to fighting corruption and impunity.

CENTAL, SDI and others send Resolution on CSDF Reform to the Government

Arcelor-Mittal's contribution to the County Social Development Fund (CSDF) represents an important source of funding for projects in Nimba, Bong and Grand Bassa counties, which are associated with the company's operations.  Unfortunately, since the provision of funds by Arcelor-Mittal (USD13m), the performance of those tasked to manage and implement projects under the scheme has been largely unsatisfactory.

CENTAL Staff Participates in Climate Change Conference in Berlin

Archie Bawo, Legal and Policy Associate of CENTAL together with 25 participants from countries across Africa completed a five-day training conference on climate change under the theme: Addressing Climate Governance Risks in a new Climate Regime- Knowledge, Economy and Equity Paradigms. The training was held from 15 – 19 June in Berlin, Germany. Mr, Bawo who work in CENTAL’s Advocacy and Legal Advice Center (ALAC) also met with staff of TI Secretariat to discuss issues pertinent to the effectiveness of the ALAC and CENTAL’s work in Liberia.
