CENTAL Joins TI in Addressing Impact of Corruption on the Poor in Liberia
The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) has begun taking initial steps towards the implementation of a project on poverty and corruption in the country. The project will be implemented in Nimba, Bong, Margibi, Grand Bassa and Grand Gedeh counties where CENTAL Integrity Clubs (iClub) are in place and active.

EITI Chairman Visits Liberia
Peter Eigen visit
The Chairman of the EITI international Board, Dr. Peter Eigen and Mr. Eddie Rich visited Liberia from October 4-7, 2009. The visit follows the earlier visit of a joint EITI/World Bank/African Development Mission to Liberia in May of this year. Dr. Eigen and Mr. Rich held meeting with the President of Liberia, Her Excellency Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the Multi-stakeholders Steering Group of the Liberia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (LEITI), Civil Societies in Liberia, the Private Sector and a dinner meeting with Liberia’s donor partners which was arranged by the World Bank.

Sixth Integrity Club Formed in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County

On May 27, 2009, CENTAL continued its nationwide campaign to create anti-corruption advocates throughout the country.  In partnership with and support from Action Aid Liberia (AAL), the campaign targeted the Southeastern Region leading to the birth of the sixth integrity Club (iClub) which was established in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County. The event was held at the YMCA Center and brought together more than forty participants in a training workshop to acquire skills in establishing and maintaining small organization, advocacy, and understanding the broad spectrum of corruption. The training workshop was followed by a brief democratic process to establish a five-member interim leadership to steer the affairs of the Zwedru iClub.

CENTAL Launches ALAC in Liberia

The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) on Tuesday, March 31 officially launched the Advocacy and Legal Advice Center (ALAC) in Liberia.  The launching program attracted several dignitaries including representatives from government, civil society, diplomatic missions and private citizens.  The Chairman of the Liberia Anti-corruption Commission (LACC), Frances Johnson-Morris served as Chief Launcher.

CENTAL Launches Local Governance Toolkit
The Center for transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) on 17 November 2008 launched a toolkit that assesses the existence, effectiveness, and citizen access to key governance and anti-corruption mechanisms in each of Liberia's 15 counties. The launching event took place at the Corina Hotel in Monrovia. The event which was attended by prominent individuals from government, civil society, media, diplomatic as well as international NGO circles, brought together up to 45 participants. Dr. Amos C. Sawyer, Former Interim President and Chairman of the Governance Commission served as keynote speaker and chief launcher at the event.
